The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel William E. Benedict (MCSN: 0-5825), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Military Operations Officer on the Staff, Commander Amphibious Group ONE from 1 July 1950 to 26 December 1950 during the planning and execution of amphibious operations against the enemy at Pohang, Korea, Inchon, Korea, and Wonsan, Korea, and during the redeployment of United Nations Forces at Hungnam, Korea. During the planning of those operations, Lieutenant Colonel Benedict was charged with the responsibility of assembling data on strength, organization and disposition of troops participating. This task was extremely difficult due to the wide distribution of troops, and their unorthodox organization. In assisting in the formulation of the plans he prepared complicated and accurate information. With his broad background, and military training and knowledge he supplied the Attack Force Commander with valuable information that assisted greatly in planning which pertained to Marine and Army affairs. During the execution of the operations he established liaison with Military Commanders and supplied continuous information to the Attack Force Commander on the situation ashore. He exhibited exceptional ability, initiative and perseverance in overcoming difficult problems which were encountered during the loading and unloading phases, and kept the Attack Force Commander advised on the progress at all times. Throughout the entire period Lieutenant Colonel Benedict discharged his duties wisely and efficiently and contributed materially to the success of these operations in which the Navy participated in Korea. His devotion to duty and excellent coordination of assigned tasks were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
