The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Charles D. Barrett, Jr. (MCSN: 0-8720), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the FIRST Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. On 5 October 1942, Lieutenant Barrett’s platoon advancing along a jungle trail running north-south, 150 yards east of the Matanikau River, was engaged in a fire fight by a well prepared Japanese ambush of from sixty to eighty soldiers. Lieutenant Barrett, completely disregarding his own safety, moved forward to the positions of every one of his men, under heavy fire supervised their fire fight, coordinated the movement of the platoon and his left for an attempted encirclement movement and when it became apparent that the enemy forces were in too great strength and in a well organized defensive position he coordinated the withdrawal of the platoons and managed in disengaging his men successfully, executing the withdrawal with a minimum of casualties. His outstanding coolness and courage was an inspiration to his men and played an important role in the execution of the engagement.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Charles D. Barrett, Jr. (MCSN: 0-8720), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving with a Marine Infantry Regiment of the FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from 13 October 1952 to 14 March 1953. Serving as a Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Barrett displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence and fearless leadership in the execution of his duties. Through his excellent knowledge of friendly and enemy capabilities and quick grasp of the tactical situation at all times, he skillfully and effectively coordinated the efforts of his battalion and its supporting units. Disregarding his personal safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy sniper, mortar and artillery fire while inspecting the fortifications on the main line of resistance. As a result of his determined efforts, selfless devotion to duty, and exemplary conduct he contributed materially to the operations throughout and was an inspiration to all who observed him. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Colonel Barrett is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
