The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit (Army Award) to Marine Gunner George E. McKain (MCSN: 238695), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 5 July to 29 August 1943, on New Georgia, Solomon Islands, where he performed the duties of Battalion Intelligence Officer with conspicuous efficiency. While commanding Intelligence patrols on 17 and 19 August 1943, he pushed his way into Japanese defenses and reported their positions as targets for attacking aircraft. On three occasions, Marine Gunner McKain eluded the enemy to successfully carry out important daytime missions by boat between Enogai Inlet and Grassi Lagoon.
