The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James T. Moore (MCSN: 504193), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Assistant Rocket Launcher Operator of Company I, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 17 June 1944. When his weapon’s number one gunner was wounded and evacuated during an enemy counterattack, Private First Class Moore assumed charge of the rocket launcher and scored hits on an attacking tank. In the face of enemy fire, he moved into an open field to better use his weapon and, resuming fire on advancing tanks, aided directly in repelling the counterattack. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Moore and the United States Naval Service.
