The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert D. Mateer (ASN: 33766256), United States Army, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company G, 397th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action at Rimling, France, during World War II. Private First Class Mateer, a machine gunner, aided in neutralizing an enemy attack on his section, leading the attack against the Germans. After becoming encircled by the enemy, he led his men back through the enemy circle and to the safety of his own lines. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
