The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Commander Jeremiah Andrew Denton, Jr. (NSN: 0-485087), United States Navy, for heroic achievement during the period 29 June to July 1967 while a Prisoner of War In North Vietnam. On 29 June 1967, after being caught communicating, his North Vietnamese captors administered severe torture punishment. Despite his painful physical condition, he steadfastly refused to divulge prisoner of war communications and organizational information. Using extraordinary courage in selecting this most difficult line of resistance, he reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service and the United States Armed Forces. [The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.]
