James Amos entered military service after graduating form the University of Idaho, and through his career held command at all levels from Lieutenant Colonel to Lieutenant General. He served as the 31st Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps from July 3, 2008 to October 22, 2010. On October 22, 2010, General Amos was appointed the 35th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was the first U.S. Naval Aviator to hold that post.
