The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Colonel Dudley Southworth Brown (MCSN: 0-113), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States, while serving as Chief of Planning Section of a Marine Amphibious Corps, and as Chief of Staff of a Task Force, during the period from 15 June to 14 October 1944. While on the staff of the Task Force he headed the group which planned the PALAU and allied operations. Colonel Brown displayed great professional ability, tireless energy, and meticulous attention to detail in creating the operational plans, including loading plans for Marine units as well as associated Army units and rendered exceptional service in supervising training plans and rehearsals for the operation. His professional skill, exhaustive knowledge, and able execution of his duties contributed materially to the success of operations of importance to the success of our continuing offensive against the enemy in this theater; and his performance of duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.     The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Brigadier General Dudley Southworth Brown (MCSN: 0-113), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States on the Staff of the Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, from 14 October 1944 to 7 June 1945. General Brown served in the capacity of Assistant Chief of Staff, G-5, and was instrumental in the preliminary planning and estimating the situation for the operations against Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. During the Iwo Jima operation he served with distinction as the Chief of Staff for the Commanding General, Expeditionary Troops, and performed all of his duties in an outstanding manner. On 28 February 1945, he was assigned duty as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, and performed all duties of that office, in supervising the training of troops of all subordinate units thoroughly and efficiently until he was detached on 7 June 1945. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Brigadier General Brown is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
