The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant Gilbert D. Bradley (MCSN: 0-15113), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in action against the enemy on Saipan and Tinian from 15 June to 1 August 1944, while serving as a medium tank company maintenance officer. First Lieutenant Bradley was responsible for the retrieving and repair of numerous tanks during the operation frequently under heavy enemy fire. During the critical landing on Saipan when his tank retriever could not be landed due to heavy enemy fire on the deep water channel, First Lieutenant Bradley transferred to an amphibian tractor and landed in time to supervise the repair of the tanks disabled in the first day of fighting. Throughout the operation his devotion to duty enabled the maintenance section to keep a high percentage of tanks in operation, despite very adverse conditions. His unusual ability, courage, initiative and tireless energy were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (First Lieutenant Bradley is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
