    Action Date:

    February 20 & 21, 1945

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Warrant Officer Roy W. Bickley (MCSN: W-42205), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as the Quartermaster of a Marine Infantry Battalion at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 20 February to 21 February 1945. Warrant Officer Bickley coordinated the supply lines from the beach to his battalion’s front lines during a period when carrying parties were the only means of transportation. He continually traversed the landing beaches on foot searching for urgently needed supplies for his battalion which was then in the attack. The entire area was subjected to intermittent enemy mortar, rocket and artillery barrages. On 21 February his battalion had moved across an airstrip which was under observation by the enemy and under enemy machine gun, mortar and high velocity anti-tank gun fire. It was necessary to carry heavy supplies across this airstrip by hand which entailed slow movement while exposed to this fire. Warrant Officer Bickley, by his outstanding devotion to duty, fearlessness in the face of heavy fire, and valiant leadership successfully supplied his battalion by encouraging and personally leading men across this airstrip on at least twenty-five occasions. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Warrant Officer Bickley is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
