The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Major Orville V. Bergren (MCSN: 0-6605), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States on the Island of Guam, Marianas Group. From 21 July to 10 August 1944. As Operations Officer of a reinforced regiment, he discharged his duties with fidelity and efficiency. When the Regimental Executive Officer was killed in action Major Bergren was frequently left in charge of the Regimental Command Post when the offensive was at its height. In this position he was required to make important tactical decisions without the assistance or advice of the Regimental Commander. Without exception these decisions were well made and installed confidence in the various tactical units of the regiment. The outstanding performance of his difficult and important duties was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Major Bergren is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
