Wyand, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as Commanding Officer, Attack Squadron TWENTY-TWO (VA-22), embarked in U.S.S. MIDWAY (CVA-41), on 9 May 1965. As the flight leader of eight aircraft participating in two strikes on Vinh Airfield in North Vietnam, Commander Wyand, despite intense enemy anti-aircraft and automatic arms fire, led his flight in low-level napalm attacks on his assigned targets. Fully aware of the intensity of enemy defenses, he participated in the second strike on the airfield and again led his flight in repeated successful BULLPUP missile attacks on his assigned targets.
