The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Roy H. Worthington, Jr. (ASN: 0-449174), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as pilot of a B-17 type aircraft of the 346th Bombardment Squadron, 99th Bomb Group. On 31 July 1944, Captain Worthington participated in a bombing mission against a vital oil refinery in Rumania. Approaching the target, the formation encountered intense, accurate and heavy anti-aircraft fire, which severed the oxygen system to half the crew, damaged the radio equipment and disabled one engine. Despite the damage inflicted, he remained with the formation to complete a highly successful bomb run. He signaled his lead aircraft of the oxygen shortage and had the formation descend to lower altitude to protect his crew. Through the long return flight, he skillfully piloted his aircraft on three engines, returning his bomber and crew safely to their base. By his outstanding professional skill, superior qualities of leadership and courageous action as displayed in forty-three successful combat missions, many of which were as squadron leader, Captain Worthington has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
