The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Thomas P. Woehl, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Woehl distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D helicopter conducting a medical evacuation mission in the area west of Thuong Duc, Republic of Vietnam. A special forces advisor was wounded and could not be evacuated due to severe weather conditions and enemy ground fire. Warrant Officer Woehl volunteered to attempt an evacuation. Upon arrival at Thuong Duc, he picked up a guide and proceeded to the landing zone. While making the final approach, the aircraft was subject to heavy enemy ground fire and sustained numerous rounds in the aircraft. Although he was wounded while making his approach, Warrant Officer Woehl successfully extracted the injured advisor. Through his courage and sound judgment he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Warrant Officer Woehl’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
