The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Dennis H. Wingate, United States Air Force, for heroism in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a C-130 aircraft navigator in Southeast Asia on 2 September 1967. On that date, Lieutenant Wingate flew an emergency air evacuation mission from Dong Ha Marine Base. Despite landing difficulties compounded by a damaged runway, abandoned tower facilities, and a hostile mortar attack, Lieutenant Wingate continued on his assigned mission. Notwithstanding a resumption of hostile firing shortly after forty-eight battle casualties were on board, Lieutenant Wingate and his crew manned their flight positions and made an immediate take-off. The conduct of Lieutenant Wingate was marked by intrepidity and excellent crew coordination in the face of great personal danger. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Wingate reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
