The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Charles E. Whigham, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 1 November 1965 and again on the night of 3 to 4 November 1965. Warrant Officer Whigham distinguished himself by meritorious achievement and valorous action. On 1 November Warrant Officer Whigham’s helicopter was one of four given the mission to delivery ammunition to ground forces and to evacuate casualties. In accomplishing this mission, it was necessary to land in a small clearing in the jungle which was under enemy small arms fire. Again on the night of 3 to 4 November 1965, Warrant Officer Whigham delivered ammunition and evacuated casualties under heavy enemy fire. In both actions, realizing the dangers involved and without regard for his own personal safety, Warrant Officer Whigham calmly and professionally made his landings and waited under fire until all wounded were prepared for evacuation. By his actions Warrant Officer Whigham insured ammunition resupply which prevented the defensive perimeter from being overrun and also saved numerous American lives by his air evacuation of casualties. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military services and reflects credit upon himself and the United States Army.
