The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain William D. Wharton, Jr., United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Wharton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of an armed helicopter. While covering an urgent medevac mission just north of Landing Zone Alouio, he continuously maneuvered his aircraft with great skill and complete disregard for his own personal safety to place accurate suppressive fire on an active anti-aircraft position. His ability as a pilot to maintain self control under intense fire and to direct the weapons system of his aircraft resulted in suppressing the enemy fire and the successful extraction of seriously wounded allied soldiers. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
