The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Michael R. Weber, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Weber distinguished himself while serving as a Pilot with Troop D, 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry, 4th Infantry Division. On 15 February 1969, Warrant Officer Weber’s aircraft was awaiting maintenance in Plei Djereng for loss of hydraulic fluid when a call for help arrived. A Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol, located on a hilltop fifteen miles northwest of Pleiku, found themselves surrounded by a company-size unit of North Vietnamese Regulars. Knowing well the condition of his craft, he rushed to the scene. As he approached the area he could see the enemy closing in on the friendly patrol. With his oil pressure fluctuating and an engine chip warning light flashing, he attacked the enemy force for three hours in support of the patrol while under heavy fire from the numerically superior enemy. He maintained his attack until reinforcements could be moved into the area. As the troop ships arrived he flew support for them until he was forced to return to his base. Warrant Officer Weber’s exceptional courage, outstanding performance, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
