The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert L. Wallace, United States Army, for exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of a command and control helicopter of the 129th Assault Helicopter Company. On a combat support mission in the Republic of Vietnam, on 2 June 1972. Observing a downed American helicopter 100 meters from known enemy positions, Captain Wallace immediately requested support from cobra gun ships. When they arrived, he descended his aircraft in a rescue attempt. Receiving automatic weapon and small arms fire, Captain Wallace successfully rescued the four American advisors. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
