The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant George A. Van Hoomissen (MCSN: 0-53761), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as an Aerial Observer attached to the First Marine Division (Reinforced), during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 4 January 1953. During an extremely dangerous flight over hostile terrain, First Lieutenant Van Hoomissen directed a highly successful air strike against enemy positions and, despite persistent and intense enemy anti-aircraft fire, courageously remained in the area to adjust the bomb drops by the striking aircraft. By his outstanding skill, marked courage and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Van Hoomissen contributed materially to the destruction or damage of numerous enemy installations and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
