The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant William F. Uhlman, III, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight against the enemy while serving with the 36th Fighter Group, in the European Theater of Operations on 18 August 1944. Lieutenant Uhlman exhibited superior airmanship and courage in the area of Orleans, France when he made a dive-bombing run through intense enemy fire and released his bombs directly upon a convoy of enemy motor transports. Observing another convoy nearby, he courageously flew his battle-damaged airplane in three strafing runs through antiaircraft and small arms fire to destroy nine additional motor transports. Lieutenant Uhlman’s unswerving devotion to duty and superior flying skill reflect high credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
