The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Walter M. Todhunter, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Todhunter distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the pilot of an armed helicopter during the insertion of allied troops near the city of Dalat, Republic of Vietnam. When one of his accompanying gunships was shot down in the midst of a large enemy force, he immediately took his ship into the intense enemy fire to protect the downed crew. Despite numerous hits on his aircraft, he continued to press his attacks until he had completely expended his ammunition. With complete disregard for his perilous situation, Warrant Officer Todhunter continued his passes with empty guns to draw enemy fire until the rescue of the downed crew was effected. Through his fearless actions he contributed immeasurably to the successful rescue of his comrades. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
