The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John W. Sutch, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Sutch distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 24 July 1971, while serving as the Air Mission Commander with 176th Assault Helicopter Company. On that date, he was directing his unit in a combat assault near Quang Ngai City. As he approached the area he noticed several enemy personnel attempting to evade. Captain Sutch immediately flew his craft over the enemy, directing in air support and ground personnel on the location. He alertly detected one of the enemy attempting to evade by swimming across the river. Captain Sutch flew his craft over the fleeing enemy and quickly apprehended him. His expert flying ability and outstanding leadership undoubtedly made the mission a complete success and was instrumental in uncovering numerous enemy supplies and documents. Captain Sutch’s personal heroism, professional competence and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 23rd Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
