The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Frank G. Stone, III, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Duc Phong, Republic of Vietnam on 31 August 1969. On that date, under conditions of darkness and extremely adverse weather, Captain Stone directed an attack to enable a mobile strike team which had been overrun to withdraw from a numerically superior hostile force. By delaying the pursuit with low passes under the overcast and directing fire from a gunship along the marked line of withdrawal, the team withdrew to safety without further loss. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Stone reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
