The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Donald Stein, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a B-25 type aircraft. On 20 July 1944, Captain Stein led a twenty-four-plane formation in an attack upon a road bridge at Ferrara, Italy. Displaying great courage and superior flying ability as he skillfully maneuvered through intense anti-aircraft fire upon the approach to the target, Captain Stein’s precision-directed run over the objective enabled his bombers to score many direct hits, destroying this vital link in enemy communication lines. Then, leading an effective evasive action through continued heavy ground fire drawing away from the target, Captain Stein returned all bombers safely to base. On more than sixty combat missions his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
