The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Mark A. Steetle, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an AC-47 Navigator near DaNang, Republic of Vietnam, on 16 January 1969. On that date, Lieutenant Steetle was called upon to defend a small United States Marine reconnaissance team, surrounded by a hostile force, and in imminent danger of being overrun. Despite marginal weather and close proximity of the friendly troops, he directed the gunship’s fire within 35 meters of the team, stopping the attack and saving many American lives. The professional, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Steetle reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
