The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Master Sergeant Thomas O. Stack, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 26 May 1971, Master Sergeant Stack volunteered for a mission deep in hostile territory to attempt an extraction of a friendly reconnaissance team surrounded by enemy forces, despite hostile ground fire, Sergeant Stack exposed himself in the open window of the helicopter and was able to direct the pilot into the load zone. During this time, he used the aircraft minigun to deliver accurate suppressive ground fire and continued to do so while the besieged team was lifted aboard by sling. As a result of his actions the team of 14 was saved from certain death or capture. His display of personal and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Air Force.
