The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer George B. Sperry, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, Warrant Officer Sperry distinguished himself by valorous actions while serving as the aircraft commander of an armed helicopter which, along with other ships in an armed platoon, was instrumental in stopping an attack on the 57 Assault Helicopter Compound at Kontum and other installations in the area. As the attack began, Warrant Officer Sperry ran through mortar and automatic weapons fire to his aircraft, took off and started delivering effective fire onto the enemy positions, thus providing cover for other ships trying to take off. He flew almost continuously for six hours, rearming and refueling amid falling mortar rounds and sporadic small arms fire. After aiding in repulsing the attack at the Kontum airfield, he was diverted to the town of Tan Canh to provide fire support there. On one of his firing passes, he sustained several hits. The lead ship of this flight received even more critical hits. He expertly guided his ship to continue providing cover for his lead ship until it was successfully landed at Dak To. Through his courage and sound judgment, he contributed immeasurably to the success of the missions. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military services and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the Untied States Army.
