The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warranty Officer One (WO-1) Fred C. Smyth, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Smyth distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 19 September 1969, while serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade (Airmobile), during a scouting mission near Fire Base Jamie, Republic of Vietnam. While engaged in a flight east of the landing zone, Warrant Officer Smyth came under intense enemy small arms fire. Although taking two hits to his person, which shattered his left arm, and numerous hits to his aircraft, warrant Officer Smyth, through great personal courage and flying skill, was able to bring his disabled aircraft to the ground in a manner that saved the lives of the crew and himself. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
