The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Fourth Class Alpheus Sloan, III, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Sloan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 3 February 1968, while serving as a crew chief of a CH-47 helicopter of Company A, 228th Aviation Battalion (Assault Support Helicopter) 1st Air Cavalry Division, supplying support for the troops at Landing Zone Jane, Specialist Sloan constantly exposed himself to the hostile fire as he placed accurate suppressive fire on the enemy emplacements. Due to the adverse weather conditions his aircraft was forced to fly at low altitudes over the enemy positions. On numerous occasions, Specialist Sloan located enemy automatic weapons positions and notified the pilot in time for him to evade insurgent’s fire. His display of personal and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
