The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Fifth Class William A. Sladek, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Sladek distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 13 November 1967, while serving as a door gunner of an armed helicopter during a combat support mission in Que Son, Republic of Vietnam. When several helicopters were downed in enemy controlled territory, Specialist Sladek continually exposed himself to the heavy hostile ground fires as he placed effective fire on the enemy positions. Despite the marginal weather conditions and darkness, Specialist Sladek remained in an exposed position to successfully engage the hostile force and allow the safe evacuation of the wounded crewmembers. Specialist Sladek’s display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
