The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Theron L. Sims, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in serial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Due Hue, Republic of Vietnam on 15 August 1969. On that date at 0100 hours, Lieutenant Sims flew in support of the Due Hue Special Forces Camp which was under rocket and mortar attack. In spite of darkness and heavy ground fire, he directed United States and Army, Republic of Vietnam artillery and an Air Force gunship against a hostile force in contact with the camp and he successfully silenced the hostile positions. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Sims reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
