The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Siegert, United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Lieutenant Colonel Siegert distinguished himself while serving as air mission commander of a recovery operation. Unable to land, Lieutenant Colonel Siegert hovered over the crash site on the edge of the mountain so that the supplies could be dropped into the area. In spite of the poor visibility, his exceptional professional competence enabled him to maneuver the aircraft and release the food and water within 10 meters of the security force. Lieutenant Colonel Siegert then returned to a secure airfield to plan the extraction of the security force from the area. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
