The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Clarence W. Sheward, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a forward air controller in Southeast Asia on 18 and 19 November 1968. On these dates, he flew in an unarmed observation aircraft to assist in the rescue effort of a downed pilot. Flying through intense anti-aircraft fire with disregard for his own personal safety, he successfully completed his mission which led to the rescue of the downed pilot. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sheward reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
