The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Frank V. Sherman, United States Air Force, for outstanding achievement while participating in aerial flight as a KC-135 Aircraft Commander while assigned to the 376th Strategic Wing, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, on 2 June 1971. On that date, Captain Sherman experienced the loss of one engine, as well as the severe malfunctioning of the left hydraulic system while in radio relay orbit. He nevertheless completed his critical mission and recovered the aircraft at home station in spite of the additional hazards presented by dense thunderstorm conditions in the immediate vicinity of the base. Captain Sherman’s experienced judgment and personal dedication insured the uninterrupted flow of vital radio communications among land, sea, and air forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sherman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
