The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Richard A. Sharpe, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Sharpe distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of a UH-1C helicopter, called upon to support a small Thai position which was being overrun by a large enemy force. Warrant Officer Sharpe piloted his aircraft continuously into the direct line of fire of the enemy’s intense automatic weapons. As a result of his fierce determination and the accurate, devastating fire, the enemy was forced to break contact and was thwarted in its attempt to overrun the Thai position. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
