The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Milo M. Overstreet, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 28 May 1968 Chief Warrant Officer Overstreet distinguished himself while serving with Company A, 101st Helicopter Assault Battalion, during the conduction of a radio relay between Dak To and Dak Pak, Republic of Vietnam. While performing the radio relay mission, Chief Warrant Officer Overstreet was summoned to come to the assistance of the Second Battalion (Airborne), 506th Infantry. The new mission was to perform a one helicopter tactical insertion for elements of Company A. After arriving at the troops’ location, he was informed that the only landing zone was located on the side of a ridgeline. Chief Warrant Officer Overstreet was also informed by the ground commander that it was imperative that the mission be completed prior to darkness. The first sortie of the insertion began at approximately 1800 hours and under extremely adverse weather conditions, Chief Warrant Officer Overstreet successfully completed thirteen sorties before 2030 hours. The ridgeline was surrounded on all sides by trees and, due to the weather conditions, seemed virtually inaccessible. Skillfully maneuvering the aircraft over the ridgeline, Chief Warrant Officer Overstreet successfully inserted the remaining troops. Chief Warrant Officer Overstreet’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the Untied States Army.
