The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Phillip H. Nolden, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an O-2B Pilot near Phu Cat, Republic of Vietnam, on 4 August 1971. On that date, Lieutenant Nolden received a request for the playing of a tape to possibly obtain a reaction from known troops in the area. Lieutenant Nolden’s courageous actions over a one-hour period resulted in intense hostile fire enabling nearby fighters to pinpoint troop locations. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Nolden reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
