The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Alex F. Nagy, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Nagy distinguished himself on 6 March 1967 while covering the extraction of a reconnaissance team under very heavy automatic weapons fire near Song Mao, Republic of Vietnam. He volunteered to fly as aircraft commander of the trail ship of a light fire team to cover the extraction of the team under extremely hazardous weather conditions and heavy enemy fire. He repeatedly flew directly over the enemy’s position purposely drawing the enemy fire upon his ship so the evacuation ship could safely extract the team. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
