The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George R. Miller, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of a helicopter gunship in a heavy fire team assigned the mission of aerial escort for a flight attempting to resupply a besieged fire base near Dak To. Due to intense enemy fire, previous attempts to resupply the surrounded outpost had failed and the situation was critical. As the lead resupply ship approached the fire base, it was met with a heavy volume of enemy small arms and anti-aircraft fire. These men reacted immediately by skillfully maneuvering their aircraft into positions to place fire on enemy emplacements and simultaneously cover their sister ships. In spite of the intense fire, these men made pass after pass, positioning their aircraft between the enemy and the vulnerable supply ships. Their skillful flying and unselfish actions contributed greatly to the success of the mission. Their exemplary courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit and the United States Army.
