The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Robert L. McKaig, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 18 August 1968 Major McKaig distinguished himself while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Tay Ninh, Republic of Vietnam and was awarded his second Distinguished Flying Cross on that date. Commencing at 0200 hours he coordinated and directed artillery and fighter aircraft in close support of a United States Army unit under attack by a large hostile force. With complete disregard for his own safety, he exposed his unarmed aircraft to heavy hostile fire, in unfavorable weather conditions, while he located targets and marked them with unerring accuracy. His actions served to preempt the hostile attack, thereby saving numerous American lives. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major McKaig reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
