The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Joseph B. Martinak, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, on 2 February 1968. Warrant Officer Martinak distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as an aircraft commander of an armed helicopter of the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, which was involved in an attack on a battalion of the enemy. He continually made firing passes on the enemy despite intense enemy fire that had earlier shot down three other aircraft. He fired his rockets with pinpoint accuracy to within 20 feet of friendly elements, while directing fire at numerous pockets of resistance until the enemy force was in complete chaos. His exemplary leadership and courageously aggressive flying ability contributed greatly to the annihilation of the enemy battalion. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
