The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer James A. Malek, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Malek distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander. When informed that a UH-1D with one passenger aboard had been downed by enemy fire, he courageously flew to the area and located the downed aircraft. He then coordinated the rescue mission with gunships, expertly guiding his aircraft through heavy enemy fire and landing adjacent to the downed men. While still subject to intense enemy fire, he efficaciously directed the fire of his door gunners and the supporting gunships, while simultaneously supervising with poise and professional aplomb the evacuee movement from downed aircraft to his aircraft. Only then did Warrant Officer Malek deftly lift off and fly through a lethal torrent of enemy fire to safety. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
