    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Ward Macauley, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as bombardier in A-20 and A-26 types aircraft of the 47th Bombardment Group (L). On 19 April 1945. Lieutenant Macauley flew in a night attack upon heavily fortified may buildings at Sassuolo, Italy. Displaying superior professional skill sad resourcefulness, Lieutenant Macauley guided his pilot through adverse weather to the briefed initial point. Then setting course for a perfect run over the objective. Lieutenant Macauley released his bombs with devastating effect on these vital military positions. On more than fifty combat missions, his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit up himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
