The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Clarence William Levingston, Jr., United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of an attack aircraft attached to Heavy Attack Squadron Twenty-one in the Republic of Vietnam. On 2 May 1969 Lieutenant Levingston was the Attack Plane Commander of a single AP-2H night attack against a major supply and infiltration route for the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Communist aggressors. Despite formidable enemy defenses and having taken three hits in the aircraft he calmly and professionally maneuvered his aircraft for a highly devastating attack at low altitude, low speed and in the face of accurate enemy ground fire. His outstanding airmanship accounted for four secondary explosions, the destruction of eight waterborne logistics crafts, the silencing of an automatic weapons site and two sustained fires. His aerial bombing excellence prevented the use of valuable arms and supplies by the enemy thus resulting in the saving of many American lives, the degradation of the enemy’s morale and depriving the enemy of the use of eight of their motorized logistics craft. Lieutenant Levingston’s leadership, aggressiveness and professional skill were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
