The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Zane J. Lemon, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Aircraft Commander over Southeast Asia on 27 December 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Lemon was instrumental in the successful defense of three flights of chaff aircraft from enemy action. Despite intense and accurate ground fire and numerous surface-to-air missiles, Lieutenant Lemon provided complete coverage for the vulnerable chaff aircraft and enabled them to successfully complete their mission without loss. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Lemon reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
