The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Duane L. Kime, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of an F-5 type aircraft of the 3rd Photographic Group. On 22 December 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Kime flew on a photographic reconnaissance mission over a number of widely separated enemy targets in the Po Valley, Italy. Upon the commencement of the photographic run over a vital airdrome near shell bursts from intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire forced him to turn off the briefed course. Realizing the importance of his mission, Lieutenant Colonel Kime elected to return to the danger zone and complete his reconnaissance. Skillfully maneuvering through continued strong enemy resistance, Lieutenant Colonel Kime completed the run before encountering an enemy fighter patrolling the area. Immediately starting a vigorous evasive action, Lieutenant Colonel Kime escaped interception and returned safely to base. Information obtained on this mission contributed greatly to subsequent Allied tactical operations in this sector. His outstanding proficiency in combat and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
