The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major James R. Kidder, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement and heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller for the 10th ARVN Division near Gia Bai, Republic of Vietnam on 30 June and 1 July 1966 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions. Major Kidder flew to the aid of friendly troops under attack and with total disregard for his own safety directed air strikes against hostile forces automatic weapons and mortar emplacements. For two hours he flew through a constant hail of hostile anti-aircraft fire directing air strikes in order to first ensure the safety of the beleaguered friendly unit. Only after their safety was secured was his attention directed to the anti-aircraft fire that threatened his existence. As a result of his courageous persistence under constant fire, numerous casualties were inflicted upon the hostile force and the small friendly unit saved from annihilation. The aerial skill and professional competence reflect great credit upon Major Kidder and the United States Air Force.
