The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Lawrence I. Karpman, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 23 July 1970. Captain Karpman distinguished himself while serving as pilot of an AH-1G armed helicopter of Company D (Attack Helicopters) 158th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopters) (Ambulance), during an emergency extraction mission near Fire Support Base Ripcord, Republic of Vietnam. Upon reaching the landing zone, Captain Karpman’s aircraft came under intense anti-aircraft and automatic weapons fire. Suppressing the enemy fire, Captain Karpman flew at low level over the area to engage the advancing enemy troops. He then provided suppressive fire for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight two downed helicopters, enabling a rescue aircraft to extract the crews. Captain Karpman’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
