The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Janos K. Karo, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in Laos. Chief Warrant Officer Karo distinguished himself on 13 March 1971 while serving as aircraft commander of a CH-54A medium lift helicopter during combat operations in Laos. Upon receiving a request for badly needed supplies, Chief Warrant Officer Karo skillfully flew his aircraft through areas of known enemy concentration. Despite intense mortar and rocket fire and no communications with the ground element, Chief Warrant Officer Karo subjected himself to the intense barrage on the approach to the landing zone. Continuing his descent under enemy fire, he successfully delivered the critically needed ammunition. Chief Warrant Officer Karo’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
